Powerful Allies: How Social Work & Civilian Oversight can foster Community Trust

Presented by the City of Philadelphia's Citizens Police Oversight Commission

This Webinar will provide CSWE participants with an overview of the role of Civilian Oversight of Police, various oversight models in existence, the history of its creation in Philadelphia, and the mission and day to day operations of the Citizens Police Oversight Commission.

Understanding police oversight offers social workers a powerful lens through which to promote social justice, influence policy reform, and contribute to safer, more equitable public institutions. The intersection of police oversight and social work presents meaningful opportunities for collaboration, professional growth, and substantial impact on the communities we serve.

Webinar attendees will also learn about the many ways that Oversight professionals come to this work, and how various professionals can use their expertise to improve and impact community-police relations through advocacy, training, allyship and policy work.

Join us as we explore ways in which social workers can make profound impacts outside of our usual practice settings.

Presenters:

Tonya McClary
Executive Director
Citizens Police Oversight Commission

Taleah-Renee Grimmage
Director of Outreach & Constituent Services
Citizens Police Oversight Commission

Learning Objectives:

  1. What is Civilian Oversight of Police, its history in Philadelphia and how it promotes transparent and accountable policing?
  2. How can the field of Social Work impact and improve community-police relations?
  3. Is Civilian Oversight a Career/Field you should consider and/or how you can become involved?
